Golubac fortress was built on steep rock cliffs about 4 kilometers downstream from the city named Golubac, on the right bank of the Danube river at the entrance to the Djerdap canyon.
The beautiful fortress of Golubac is mentioned in several legends. According to one, it got its name thanks to the Byzantine princess Jelena, who was held captive in the tower of the fortress. Even the beautiful view of the Danube could not help lonely and sad Jelena. Only pigeons were giving her hope, as they were coming in and out of the tower, so that’s the reason they named the city Golubacki grad because a pigeon in the Serbian language is “golub”.
